Presenter:
Latoya Peterson, Racialicious
Description:
The tangled issues of race and privilege in our society come to a boiling point on the internet. Exploring the complicated place of race in society, this presentation examines the ideas of race in the digital environment with a specific focus on social media.
Other panelists may include Jay Smooth and Phil Yu.

Jay Smooth vlogs at Ill Doctrine (www.illdoctrine.com), blogs at hiphopmusic.com, and founded New York's longest running hip-hop radio show, WBAI's Underground Railroad.

Phil Yu blogs at Angry Asian Man (www.angryasianman.com), a blog about Asian-American news, politics, and pop culture.

Here's a little bit more about myself:

I'm co-founder and president of New Demographic (www.newdemographic.com), a consulting firm that helps people learn about the real issues behind race and racism without having to endure the misery of diversity training.

I publish Racialicious (www.racialicious.com), an award-winning, influential blog about race and pop culture. I also host the podcast Addicted to Race (www.addictedtorace.com) and blog at Anti-Racist Parent (www.antiracistparent.com) and Race in the Workplace (www.raceintheworkplace.com).

This panel discussion would have a great opportunity to show the ways that racism still exists in our society. The mainstream media (msm) rarely highlights the type of ignorant comments littered all over comment walls or other saddening experiences in digital interface (i.e. X-Box Live). Electronic outlets come with such anonymity that racist, sexist, and heterosexist comments become a norm. Explaining the progress of particular blogs and other electronic media that have successfully moderated discussion regarding race and other social issues lends another arm to educating people about the nature of these problems.

While social media will not eradicate inequality, it does have potential to properly educate and provide a forum for constructive discussion among a vast majority of people in a way that MSM cannot, quite literally, afford to do.

Racialicious is an excellent, daily-read kinda blog offering astute and thoughtful social criticisms... to have Carmen, Jay and Phil offering their insight on this important topic would be a blessing. Intelligent discourse, work it!

Social media, like blogs, help form opinions and open a forum to potentially solve our problems - one of them being racism. It's unfortunate racism pervades our institutions and the way we interact personally, effecting the way we see the world and the people who live in it, and the way we vote in a democratic society. The proposed panel seems qualified to answer this question.

I'm looking forward to this panel -- so far I've seen social media blow out discussions of race and racism with no solutions, so I'd be happy to see what you guys offer. Plus I've been waiting for Carmen and Jay to do SXSW panels for a long time.
