Virginia Kuhn, Institute of Multimedia Literacy, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California
Description:
While many note the ways in which Web 2.0 technologies—from blogs to YouTube—encourage widespread political activism, this panel speculates about how such engagement changes once average people can "speak" with images, looking specifically at the Remix America site, which is powered by a collaborative video editing platform.

Virginia is an incredible speaker that knows how to engage a room full of people...all her work is highly recommended ;-)

Virginia is truly a pioneer in multimedia scholarship -- she was the first person in the U.S. to submit a multimedia dissertation. She's great and I'm sure she'll bring the cream of the crop to this panel . . .

I've only heard awesome things about Virginia Kuhn! Have experimented with Remix America and am eager to see how/if it grows and what sort of life/impact it might have.

My remixing desires were always much larger than my technological realities. Virginia's work on Remix America has democratized the ability to remix video online.

Thanks, all, for the comments! Not only will I bring a great group if this panel flies, I will also showcase some work my students will do this semester in Remix America. The site uses Kaltura, the open source collaborative video platform and since WikiMedia has adopted Kaltura, it's an important project to address reflectively and with great intent. The course into which this work will be integrated, can be found here: http://iml.usc.edu/honors/ and is part of USC's Honors in Multimedia Scholarship program (itself an innovative undergraduate program which I direct).

For Remix America are students relying on fair use or content that is licensed for remixing like those works under creative commons?
on 24/8/08
Sorry for the delay--I was unplugged in the jungle! We (my students and I) will rely on fair use since this is an educational endeavor. As for the content at Remix America, I believe we don't need any sort of creative commons--the use is critical, which is covered....
