When organizations use Twitter to promote themselves, it's largely about playing a role. The person tweeting is tasked to be on message as the voice of the organization while creating a unique and engaging personality to draw an audience in. At the theater, we gladly accept this fake-me-out, but in social media where do we draw the line between being the playwright and playing a character?
Imagine, if you will, that Shakespeare was on Twitter. Would he tweet as his organizational-self, or as one of the many "voices" he created? Would the context of his 140 characters be different depending on "who" says it, even if the source is literally the same? And how could his underlying message consistently reflect the goals for tweeting in the first place? Welcome to the murky world of defining organizational identity with social media.
During this (overly) dramatic session, we will pick the brains of people who live this challenge daily in the non-profit sector, and learn what the Bard's immortal words can teach us all about brand, messaging and creating a compelling voice on Twitter.

They're convening Barcamp-like unconferences called PubCamps all over the country, allowing local techies and citizen journalists to forge collaborative projects with NPR and PBS stations, both online and offline. Its true impact has yet to be measured, but Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and every other social media platform have already caused a revelation in how people want to communicate. They want to connect. They want to share in more than one medium. They are in control.
The challenge for every business, organization, and nonprofit or for-profit company is that the world of social media is like the Wild Wild West. Everything is changing so fast it's hard to keep up. What's new? What works? How can I build community? How can I monetize it? And just when you think you have it figured out, something new shows up.
Last year's Core Conversation was standing room only. People were trying to listen from the hall because they could not get in. Leaders from the nonprofit world and the for-profit world and regular folks like you and me came together to share ideas. It was a discussion that was not only useful and informative, it was truly amazing!
Social media is not about me - it's about WE. We can influence real change in our world. This Core Conversation is an open forum in which we share our experiences, strengths, failures, and victories. In this talk we will explain how Opportunity International (a large microfinance organization) left non-profit specific technology platforms and hasn’t looked back.
Traditionally, non-profits have used CMS and CRM platforms from dedicated non-profit technology companies such as Blackbaud and Convio. However, these are usually expensive and lack the feature set that commercial organizations take for granted. In addition, these platforms lock non-profits into using expensive specialized consultants and designers. Opportunity International has transitioned from Blackbaud to general market software platforms (Wordpress, Mailchimp, Salesforce, & Ruby on Rails) for much of its technology needs. This has resulted in a better, cheaper user experience for donors and internal users. This technical talk will explore the rationale and process used so that other non-profits can do the same.
We will explore how a Wordpress site has boosted traffic, increased SEO rank, and been much cheaper to build and maintain than our previous Blackbaud system. We will detail how we switched to Mailchimp for donor communication, which made outbound emails much more efficient and effective. We will also outline an internal move to Salesforce and explore when it makes sense to custom build software within a non-profit.

How can nonprofits and government agencies prioritize their goals, edit user experience, heighten incentive and create ease of use to get results? Is quality of action more important than quantity? Can you have both with a functional and easy UX?
When a nonprofit or government agency wants someone to take action online a conflict of interest arises. The organization's ideal goal is to capture as much information about a user and then wants them to take action in as many ways as possible (i.e. join, donate, advocate). While the user who wants to support a cause may not want to spend too much time filling out forms and trudging through a long and laborious user experience.
Ad Council has over 50 national campaigns developed in partnership with nonprofits, government agencies and ad agencies. Ad Council oversees the development of the campaigns' websites and social media. On the panel, our nonprofit, advertising and web development community could speak to their experiences with UX design and how this relates to online goal conversions.

The first is that an idea shared is often an idea bettered. The more people who can be brought on board to challenge, test, refine and improve the more chance the idea has to shine. The second is ‘so what if someone takes your idea? You were never going to get round to it anyway. And hey, the world is a better place as a result. Be happy.’ We have found no shortage of people wanting to share their ideas since starting up Idea a Day in August 2000. We publish one idea every day at idea-a-day.com and email it out to our database of subscribers. For free. Seth Godin is a fan. ‘The more often you create and share ideas, the better you get at it. The process of manipulating and ultimately spreading ideas improves both the quality and the quantity of what you create,’ he says. That’s why he agreed to write the preface of The Big Idea Book which featured the five hundred best ideas on the site. The method has proven itself in one of the worlds' most insecure regions, in conditions of extreme poverty. If it works there, it can make it anywhere. How do we make it everywhere? Changing our world from your living room. - Equipped with the highest levels of education, wealth, and spare time in the world (how much television did you watch last night?), it is time to act. Our world needs YOU. Apathy is a luxury we can no longer afford. To create the change you wish to see, all you need is a laptop, your favorite beverage, and the willingness to care. This gap isn’t because street harassment hurts any less, it’s because there hasn’t been a solution. Until now. The explosion of mobile technology has given us an unprecedented opportunity to end street harassment, and with it, the chance to take on one of the final new frontiers for women’s rights around the world.
This discussion looks at how digital technology has opened up new opportunities for social movements by changing the way we engage in them. In the days of Rosa Parks, activists united around an issue by making an example of an individual act of discrimination, and using it to broadly tackle structural discrimination. But everyday discrimination remained, many stories went untold, and participation was limited. This discussion addresses how technology has changed the game by giving us a tool where everyone can be a Rosa Parks, and everyone can stand her and say, “This is not OK.” The talk will profile how the organization, Hollaback, has successfully used mobile phones, apps, and geo-mapping to build the movement to end street harassment.

Bridge Communities (bridgecommunities.org), a Chicago non-profit, is dedicated to transforming the lives of homeless families. Bridge holds an annual Sleep Out Saturday (bridgecommunities.org/Sleep-Out-Saturday) fundraising event each November where participants are encouraged to spend a night outdoors to experience what it must be like to be homeless. Participants sleep in sleeping bags on the ground, tents, and cardboard boxes!
This year's event will be supported by an online pledge system allowing individuals and teams to create profiles, specify goals, and monitor progress. We're also excited to try to create some social media stir.
A corresponding text-to-donate campaign (i.e. text "help" to 55555 to donate $10) will be featured in local radio and TV spots, online, and via e-newsletters. Text-to-donate and text-to-pledge is new territory for most non-profits...especially smaller ones...but an area that many are interested in (based on the emergence of mobile technologies and technology preferences of younger people who prefer texting and social media to e-mail and other traditional communication efforts).
This session will summarize Bridge Communities' Sleep Out Saturday fundraising efforts, detail the logistics of setting up and running a text-to-donate campaign, explain the difference between a text-to-donate and a text-to-pledge campaign, and report the degree of participation and overall success experienced by Bridge Communities through this campaign.

Food blogger Julie van Rosendaal used the social web to rally dozens of chefs, foodies, and other bloggers to contribute recipes for a printed cookbook, "Blog Aid: Recipes for Haiti," she created and sold online, raising over $45,000 for Haitian relief in just seven days. And then there's the "What Would You Buy with $50?" campaign created by artist/designer Jiashan Wu and Joyce Meng, founding CEO of Givology. This widespread social media campaign allowed people all over the world to buy drawings created by kids in Uganda for $50, benefiting the Circle of Peace School.
