Practicing physicians have an ethical duty to move science forward by telling their stories and sharing opinions online. Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a pediatrician, bioethicist, and mother of two, will take the audience through a journey of how physicians can propel evidence, science, & research back to the forefront. She deciphers myth, provides reason, adds humor, and brings humility back to health care. Break the divide between doctor and patient; watch how physicians engage communities using transparency through their storytelling in social media. Known for her charismatic speaking, engaging storytelling, and approachable tone, she will describe how to harness the power of story to improve the health and lives of our children. Through her mommy-pediatrician blog, SeattleMamaDoc, Twitter feed, freelance writing & speaking, she illustrates how a growing community of cogent health care providers & patients, can realign science to empower consumers of health care to make informed decisions. Learn how to prevent disease and injury using new media. You’ll engage with a dynamic physician & mother who collects insight while serving as provider-mother-patient. Watch, enjoy, and learn how to capture attention by telling an earnest, unedited, and uncensored story. Learn how to feel good about making great decisions for your health. Join Dr Swanson as she works to change the world and listen to science, while preserving and protecting our health.

Interactive information design is good, but not enough, to keep the earth green and to keep people healthy. Mobile phone technology, used by billions of people daily, is a potential tool for change. Two case studies show how to combined information design with persuasion design in prototype mobile phone applications to achieve these ecological and health objectives. We explain the development of their user interfaces, information architecture, and information visualization.
The Green Machine uses the Smart Grid, which enables home consumers to monitor their energy consumption. We show typical screens, a consumption meter at the top as a constant reminder of the user's performance, customizable data charts, competitors, and multiple time frames of one day, month, or longer. A view into 100 years from now shows an estimate of what the earth will be like if people behave as the user does now.
The Health Machine, intended for use by lower-income, lower-educational level people, enables people to see a summary of their nutrition and conditions that may lead to Type 2 diabetes, statistics of eating habits, an image of their future body, techniques to improve health, and /competitions with others.
Coupled with databases, contexts, and users, the Green Machine and the Health Machine show how to use data effectively to change people's energy conservation behavior and health behavior.

Want to learn how to use Twitter as a game-changer in healthcare? Find out how we can go way beyond just tweeting at, following and friending doctors, nurses, patients and caregivers and actually BUILD applications and communities to make a quantum leap forward in how we communicate our healthcare needs, share tips and gather information we can trust. I'll show you sample Twitter applications that make clever use of lists, private accounts and even Twitter bots to revolutionize healthcare in the 21st century.
