This panel discussion will highlight the effectiveness of the corporate healthcare marketing machine versus the grassroots initiatives of smaller, and more innovative start-up businesses and agencies. Which outlet provides more relevant and accurate information? How do each of these serve the different audiences they are targeting, and which would people rather get their information from? Join Medical Inflatables founder and president Lauren Hill to learn how grassroots medical marketing has changed the way hospital conglomerates teach the public about the life-threatening illness plaguing so many Americans today.

This panel seeks to change the conversation from “What can technology conferences do about diversity?” to “What can attendees do about diversity at technology conferences?”
The panel is composed of speakers who have each presented at multiple technology conferences on topics that did not focus on race or diversity but instead spoke on topics of sci-fi, electronic ownership of email and digital wills, the influence of mobile development via comic books, social media for youth and business automation lessons from Amazon.
While the diversity of some major tech conferences has steadily improved over the years, geek culture - which remains overwhelmingly white and male - is still the norm. This can be daunting for people who, despite being experts in technology and new media, don’t see themselves reflected in the marketing materials or content. For example, there are almost no people of color on sxsw.com home page.
The panelists will share how individuals can contribute to making technology conferences more inclusive.
How about: This panel will look at some of the cultural and economic factors that shape inclusion and exclusion and generate an action list for attendees.

According to recent surveys, women represent approximately 20% of the total design/technology workforce. Considering that women consume electronics, games, and websites at approximately the same rate as (and in many cases greater than) men, why are women so under-represented in their creation? This panel dives into the numbers to examine this surprising trend. We will also explore possible causes of this disparity and examine how some companies have tried to win women back.

However more than 2/3 of all crowdfunding campaigns fail and clear lessons are being drawn about what works and what doesn’t. Come and hear from the founders of four different crowdfunding platforms - IndieGoGo, StartSomeGood, 33needs and LoudSauce – about the most exciting developments in this field, what they’ve learned about what it takes to succeed and the new ways entrepreneurs are raising funds and building community to turn their ideas into action.

Their Story Is Our Story (TSOS) is inspired by witnessing my dad’s fight against cancer. Sharing our experiences helps keep his memory alive, and hopefully, provides comfort and support to those in similar situations. Each cancer journey is unique and deserves to be told. Their stories are our stories.
My project aims to support those affected by this horrible disease. They can connect with others in similar situations through a website where they will be able to share their cancer stories and their loved ones’ story while giving and receiving support. Think of it as a “Cancer Facebook.” A TSOS Profile allows cancer patients and their loved ones to share status updates, pose questions and post inspirational quotes. Individuals can further their relationships and stories by creating groups and forums. Getting involved with TSOS online is simple and quick.
In addition to an online and print presence, TSOS’s goal is to become a pillar in the community by holding cancer awareness events and providing college scholarships.
TSOS will host community events such as cancer walks, concerts and sports competition fundraisers. These ideas would raise cancer awareness in the community and bring the community together for the cause.
My dad will always be an inspiration to me. Through TSOS I can continue his story and maintain the connection that I’ve had with him. His story will live on and as TSOS grows we will all contribute to a story that will all be ours.

So how do you move processes and design for print to an online model, without losing the richness and brand identity of the original publication? We'll take lessons from the venerable British sci-fi series Dr. Who – which has managed to reinvent itself for almost 50 years.

Behavior change is probably the single most important issue in healthcare.
If we eat less, exercised, and quit the smoking, hard drugs, and dangerous sex we would all probably live about a decade longer. A non-crappy decade, when we can still chew our own food and we do not need diapers.
As healthcare providers we know that somewhere between the third and fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. is preventable medical errors.
In both cases, we need behavior modification. Most evidence shows that behavior modification simply does not work well. So we keep getting fatter and sicker as patients. Doctor keep doing the best they can... and still kill and injure people regularly.
Despite SXSW talks to the contrary, the hope around Gamification in healthcare falls flat on its face. Gamification of healthcare for consumers will simply not work, but you might be surprised to find out why. This talk will focus on what does work.
The take-away from this session is simple: Programmer, heal thyself.

Mobile is about real integration in advertising campaigns. But if you’re thinking about doing iAds, banner ads and websites, you’re thinking small. Mobile is the opportunity to create real Engagement with our audiences, giving them new ways to communicate with Emotion and providing them with content that can be as Entertaining as it is informative.
With mobile, we are no longer creating ads. We are creating products. So in addition to art and copy, you have to start thinking about how someone is going to use your mobile experience as it relates to context and relevance. And when you encourage someone to use something you’ve built the experience can become more intimate OR more social. More than storytelling, we’re creating a place where people can tell their own stories with games, infographics, UGC, tweets, sharing, blogging and ultimate personalization.
By thinking about mobile technologies in this way, advertising agencies can provide real value and enhancements for a brand’s products and services. You’re also thinking about the future of brand building and thinking larger about your creative opportunity.

With analysts predicting the number of connected home devices to rise from 1.7B to 8.2B over the next few years, a new demand for instant, remote access to the content created by these smart gadgets is forming. A recent study from Harris Interactive found that Americans believe they should be able to remotely access their digital devices while on vacation (74%), while in bed (48%) and even while on their honeymoon (17%).
The combination of smart hardware and cloud based software is organically becoming the way to meet this demand for connected device ubiquity. By leveraging the accessibility of the cloud and turning devices into services, consumers are able to access and control aspects of their lives from afar. This talk will analyze the growing impact of smart technology on our everyday lives while addressing the challenges and benefits of creating a DaaS, cloud-based product to meet consumer demand. There will be a particular focus on personal video streaming from the cloud.

Can making the musical experience more social and shareable help the music industry survive? The degree to which any new digital music company will be successful will be based on their ability to engage people. Music is a social construct, and while people still sit at home listening to music alone, they are more likely to share their music experiences if given the tools.
The cloud has enabled people to do much more with music from interacting with the art, songs, and ephemera around their music, to being able to create their own content and layers around their music discoveries.
Will rich social functions - discovery, visualization, playlists, interactivity, maybe even game aspects, coupled with ease of use around multiple connected devices (i.e., go seamlessly from computer to phone to car to living room), find enough success to save the music industry?
This panel will investigate the different social and interactivity tools the music industry can use to add to their bottom line.

Many speculate that mobile money is the next strong growth driver in the wireless value chain . One of the biggest growth areas has been the democratization of point of sale mobile payment processing. There are also a lot of companies vying to create and own the mobile wallet. The big question though is -- how do we drive mass adoption? Many players are betting on innovative technologies such as Near Field Communications (NFC) in making mobile money a reality for all. Regardless, we at Intuit believe that the winning idea and technology will not win because it’s innovative. It will win only if it makes the lives of people truly better and easier than pulling out a credit card from their wallet or swiping a card. We will address how we see the mobile market progressing, what we hear from our 50 million small business and consumer customers and how everyone in the wireless industry can look to solve the customer need first when driving adoption for mobile money services.

Remember the Verizon commercial where the representative repeatedly asked the person on the other end of the phone, “can you hear me now?”. One could argue that the equivalent of the Verizon commercial is “Is there an app for that?”. Blackberry’s, Apple iPhone’s, and Androids allow users the capability of downloading an endless array of legitimately useful applications thrown amongst a slew of completely nonsenseickle ones. Drunk Dialer, iFart, SimStapler, Airport Sounds, Cry Translator, Zit Picker, Fake An Excuse, Beer Goggles, & Drink Buddy are a few of the silly applications available for download on the iPhone. There seems to be an application for everything these days (Pocket Girlfriend, much?) which begs the question, have we really gotten this lazy? Maybe next time you find yourself in a bathroom stall without toilet paper, you should think about creating an application in order to avoid finding yourself in that situation in the future.

Game designers have undeniably honed the art of pleasing guys who spend their downtime sitting in their basements battling orcs. And while many are excited by the possibility of accessing larger gaming audiences through platforms like Facebook, they may find their new player isn’t your stereotypical gamer. Reflecting the changing demographics of social networks like Facebook, the average player of today’s social games is a 43 year old woman.
These women may not consider themselves “gamers,” but the reality is that women are driving the development and popularity of social games like FarmVille. With 55 percent of the social gaming population being female, companies are changing their strategies to attract and hold onto these “accidental gamers.” In this discussion, Chris Trottier, a 40-something mom, causal gamer, and accidental game designer herself, will cover what appeals to this new era of gamers and how designers can develop a game that speaks to women.

I've spent the last year working on a project to gamify and disrupt the international development sector through mobile and social games. I've built an incredible team of investors, developers, designers, animators, nonprofits, and supporters around a product that had yet to exist and around a person who had never completed a similar project. Furthermore--they donated their services in the beginning months for free!
This panel will talk about how to rally the best of the best around an idea, even if you've never met these people before--and how to successfully drive a product to market with little or no experience, but a whole lot of passion.
I'll also address diving into the tech and gaming spheres, only having a background in online publishing, music, and international relations (i.e. no technical skills). I'll talk about getting people motivated, hitting their passion and heart string chords, and why projects like this are the crux of the best ways to address global issues and drive innovation.
I'll also talk about never saying no or giving up, and how to best present yourself.
Finally--I'll close on the details of the game, how it came together, how I was thinking about it constantly, crowdsourcing ideas from everywhere I went, and why everyone should have a passion side project like this.

Over the last few years, many digital agencies have made great progress towards getting a coveted seat at the clients' strategic table, which in the past has been the sole domain of the traditional agency
This puts today’s digital agencies at a fundamental crossroads in their evolution. They can remain true to their production house roots, and continue to work with lead agencies, or they can embark upon the path to become a lead agency themselves, and incorporate elements of the traditional agency into their own offer.
The Society of Digital Agencies (SoDA) presents a panel discussion for digital agencies that want to evolve their business to lead client engagements,
The quest to become a lead agency may hold the promise of wealth and glory, but it is fraught with many trials and tribulations.
Challenges around changing business models, skill sets, processes and philosophy required to make the change will be discussed and debated amongst prominent SoDA members.

In a multi-platform world, launching a successful app often means being everywhere at once. With new phones and tablets seemingly launching every day, multi-platform launches are a must. Additionally, consumers increasingly expect a consistent experience across all their devices. Developers face a fragmented market in which they must anticipate where their consumers will be. This presentation will examine the challenges of launching a successful app in a multi platform world. Questions to be explored include, should developers stick to one platform or include as many as possible? Should developers optimize the experience for each platform, or create a unified experience across multiple devices? The next digital decade will be of a scope too big for most companies’ siloed, understaffed, interactive marketing organizations. The future of digital marketing is neither an ideal organizational structure, nor a set of characteristics to layer into a multichannel campaign, nor a handful of explosive and trendy technologies for marketers to hang their hats on. Rather, in the future marketers must work with technologies and technologists to master four directives: Customize, Optimize, Respond, and Empower. At Forrester, we refer to this framework as CORE.

Shoshana Zuboff, in her seminal “In the Age of the Smart Machine”, presented us with the choice to “informate” and empower ordinary working people to make critical and collaborative judgments. Despite the clear warning, some twenty-plus years later, information technologies have progressively robbed workers of gratification, self-image, capacity to express and engage, and the will or desire to contribute or innovate.
Today human “beings” as broadly characterized as “resources,” mechanistically evaluated and measured by performance criteria rooted in output and financial results rests in the cross-hairs of the social media phenomenon.
We propose to re-focus on the social “being” rather than the human “doing” through analysis of social behavior artifacts; the resulting semantic ontological signaling framework can provide the insight and institutional awareness that enables semantic coherence, enhancing social cohesion, commitment, collaboration, and ultimately, individual contribution.
