There's a lot of problems to fix in the world, and it can be hard for the average joe to know where to start.
But for the folks on the mission-critical front lines of any cause, overcoming apathy and compassion fatigue are key. They enable maintaining funding and growing new, life-saving initiatives.
Join Lauren Balog from ONE.org, James Wu from The Acumen Fund, Lindsay Maines from Rock and Roll Mama, and Jennifer James from Mom Blog Magazine to discuss the role story played in campaigns they worked on this past year.
Lindsay and Jennifer helped Lauren engineer ONEMoms, which involves a trip to Kenya and engaging 10,000 new ONE members. James Wu is the brains behind "Sanitation is Sexy", and a "Moms Matter" contest to highlight maternal mortality. The winner of each of was featured on the front page of YouTube and generated almost a million views, respectively.
ONE.org is charged with advocating for programs which benefit the world's poorest nations. The Acumen Fund seeks to create a world beyond poverty by investing in social enterprises, emerging leaders, and breakthrough ideas.
Lindsay and Jennifer are writers, mothers, and humanists. They weren't sure WHAT to care about, or how to help change the status quo. But once the stories were told to them by the Laurens and James of the world, they saw no choice but to go forth and bear witness to the difference actions make. And to hope that their telling the stories would inspire others to do the same.

Social media gives celebrities powerful new ways to mobilize millions to get involved in social causes – but it’s easy to get it wrong. On World AIDS Day 2010, Alicia Keys and a number of A-listers “digitally died,” calling on the public to resurrect them by donating $1M for HIV/AIDS initiatives. Was asking celebs to stop tweeting the best way to fight AIDS? Or was Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign a better approach, asking celebs and everyday people to use their social graph to address LGBT intolerance and bullying?
Experts from media, non-profits and an actual celebrity will explore these and other cases that illuminate the power and pitfalls of using celebs for social good. Through the session, you will hear their insights on when, why and how to effectively engage talent to advance social causes -- as well as rookie mistakes to avoid. Join us for a discussion that will help you effectively harness the power of celebrity in your next digital pro-social campaign.

Good libraries are community-minded, technologically-aware, devoted to increasing access to information, and interested in preserving the local cultural heritage. Good newspapers aggregate and curate information for their readers, prioritize the local population, and are the record of a place, a time, a citizenry. Both believe they must tell stories for everyone, not just themselves.
Libraries have experience with media production, and are already a known community resource. Supporting communication within their community falls within the library’s mandate to increase access to information. Building on the “maker” ethic, how can libraries help their communities make their own news, write their own stories, publish their own histories?

When you kick the bucket, you'll leave behind a vast amount of digital information: a lifetime's worth of Tweets, emails, blogs, photos, videos and more. They're the product of a creative life well lived.
In fact, this information forms a rich archive of who we are and what we think. But in a world of passing technology, will our digital selves simply fade away as the victim of neglect? Or will they live on in perpetuity like the Great Pyramids to be remembered and celebrated?
Libraries frequently preserve the collections of the significant and famous, but what about the rest of us? Does technology hold the key to widespread digital preservation? Or should we just die and be dead?
As we think about the future of experiencing the past, how should we prepare? What technology will we need? And what will that mean for society? Join our group of archivists, technologists and interaction designers who are going to discuss the challenges and opportunities of a digitally preserved world.

This has been accomplished in part by creating and nurturing a passionate online community of brand ambassadors.

The growth of social media and its influence on public opinion has affected almost every sector of culture, business and public affairs. Animal welfare has proven to be no exception. Communications and marketing experts from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) -- the oldest and one of the largest humane organizations -- will discuss how digital and social media has provided new opportunities and challenges to the animal protection movement. Included in the discussion will be recent case studies of how the ASPCA has utilized social and digital media channels (such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs) to successfully influence public opinion on key animal welfare issues of the day, as well as how the grassroots are increasingly relying on the same tools to influence local communities and public officials. Finally, the panel will discuss how smaller humane organizations can put social media to use to more effectively raise funds, reach new supporters and influence local animal welfare policy.

In the trenches of an economic downturn, people are stuck wondering how to give to others while fending for themselves. As saving money moves to the front of everyone’s mind, giving back still holds strong but becomes more challenging. At the same time we are constantly reminded with the message that now, more than ever, non-profit organizations need our help. However, in the mix of these conflicting behaviors, a new dynamic has presented itself: saving and giving can in fact work cohesively.
Giving consumers the option to give back while simultaneously receiving a service or product seems to be the perfect compromise.
Recent research shows that consumers want to make purchase decisions that contribute to making the world a better place. Consumers want to have companies give back to the world, rather than just take from it. This movement is shaping the way consumers shop online and off; it is taking me-commerce and molding it into a we-commerce. This panel will explore the movement towards a we-commerce and why it is beneficial to both the consumer and the company; why it is beneficial to both the individual and the world.

When it comes to serving artists, makers and activists, librarians don’t always know best -- but we can learn. In this talk, librarians from the Boston Radical Reference Collective present a model for project support that hinges on real-time collaboration with users, portability, and engagement among peers. When we create online research guides (lists of resources on a particular topic, usually compiled and edited by librarians) with audience interaction, the result is something more than a list of links. The process fosters conversation among librarians and users, and enables expert-users to exchange information about resources with each other. This knowledge helps librarians re-imagine and adapt research tools for diverse uses. We act as library advocates and discover ways to better serve our communities. And we do all of this beyond library walls -- at social events, community meetings, and other public sites. In this session, we’ll create a guide on-site, with activities that you can adapt and use.

As the nation’s leading microsavings provider, EARN gives families the tools to build wealth and achieve life-changing goals such as saving for college, buying a first home, or starting a small business. We believe strongly in innovation, not just in our programs but also in our communications work. That’s why in 2010 we began the process of developing what we’re calling our “story engine”. No, this isn’t secret government-funded project to build a nuclear-fueled story car. Rather, EARN’s story engine is a system we’ve created for finding, developing and sharing the amazing stories of our clients (we call them our Savers), donors, supporters and even our staff. Each of the thousands of individuals who have come into contact with EARN have a unique and powerful story to share. What we’ve done is develop a way to share those stories. Imagine turning one of your city's most beleaguered and notorious neighborhoods into the home of some of the country's most innovative media projects. This panel examines how the Knowle West Media Centre in Bristol achieved just that. The KWMC's University of Local Knowledge project has inspired astounding community growth and regeneration through collaborative media. The KWMC created 800 videos about local crafts and skills; then they brought professionals together with local experts to learn from one another about everything from cars to photography to horse whispering. The project was organized through a green, word-class media centre established in one of the more troubled parts of Bristol. The panel examines how the project directors used digital media and digital art to make the ULK project a success in engaging and teaching digital literacy, as well assisting in community regeneration.
This process involved a creative use of public space, media centre space, wikis, blogging, videography, computer classes, and sound mixing studios to combine the physical and digital into one cohesive learning environment. KWMC Director Carolyn Hassan will explain the process and answer question about the use of collaborative media for successful community regeneration.

When they built the interstate highways through Detroit, they divided neighborhoods and paved a path to the suburbs. When we look at the digital divide, we see the information superhighway is doing the same thing: setting communities apart and giving the more affluent a path to abandon the city. For all of the Internet’s power to unite those of us who use it, how can we ensure that it does not divide us from those who don’t?
Since 2009 the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition has been using media and technology for community organizing and development. We won a federal grant of $2 million to support this effort. We have learned from our experience with the auto industry that getting trained to wait for corporate investment will not put everyone to work. Encouraging poor people to give their money to Comcast and AT&T does not create wealth. And there is no use in telling people to go online if their local businesses and organizations aren’t there, and instead all they find are news articles about how hopeless Detroit is.
Instead of trying to fit our communities to existing technology, we are trying to reshape technology to fit to our communities. We are building our offline communities, then going online together with new sites for their most important institutions and conversations. We are teaching people to teach, as well as learn; to be entrepreneurs, and not just consumers; to build their own communications networks that match to the social networks in their neighborhoods.
