What do pirates, terrorists, computer hackers, and inner city gangs have in common with Silicon Valley? Innovation.
In this talk, you’ll be exposed to emerging forms of underground innovation happening in the informal and black market economies. The “deviant entrepreneurs” that make up the black market are not mere threats to our social and economic stability, but also present us with real best practices that can be applied to business thinking.

In 2010 Brazil elected their first female president, Dilma Rousseff. Not only was she the first female to be elected, she was also unique in being the first candidate in Brazil to connect with millions of voters online to solidify public opinion. While many emerging markets, South America in particular, love social media, their electorate had never participated in elections through an online medium. The session will explore the future of digital in Brazil (and emerging markets) that have thus far embraced the evolution of new media, mostly by embracing it via traditional media channels. We will look at how, by leveraging diverse social media channels, Dilma’s team was able to introduce and humanize her in a way never before seen by the Brazilian people.

What is money anyway? It’s an agreement. Email and HTTP are just agreements too, so why can’t we invent a new money & value system that’s as borderless as the Internet?
While central banks are playing IOU with each other and stock markets are offering free roller coaster rides, this panel will start with a crash course on the origin and definition of money. We then explore the vast potential, historical lessons and new questions that come with inventing a new currency made for & made by an Internet-based society.
(NOTE for panel reviewers: I’m still in the process of confirming all the relevant speakers for this sessions. I need another few weeks but the line-up will be strong & awesome for this topic. I am convinced that this is a critical new area of interest in the coming year and it’d be great to mark SXSW as an epicenter for its discussions & spreading thereafter. I'm also still looking for a 4th [female] panelist within the academic/economist community)

Companies like Facebook are teaming up with Skype to provide video for their users. Google just released “hangout,” a group video chat service, as part of Google+. Blue Jeans Network just released a service that allows businesses and consumers to meet over video regardless of which video service or technology (and regardless of which device) they are using.
Why is there so much video news? Why is video becoming the “new thing?” It’s because the market is finally ripe for video.
Historically, video and video conferencing has been complicated, incompatible and expensive - especially when compared to audio which is easy, interoperable, and affordable. For example, imagine if your audio conferences only supported iPhones, and you had to worry about whether the people you wanted to meet with had or could get access to an iPhone. It sounds preposterous, but that’s how video has been.
People want video to be simple, easy to use and affordable. And now that’s exactly what businesses and consumers are able to get.
In this session, Blue Jeans Network CEO and co-Founder, Krish Ramakrishnan, will be joined by executives from key companies in the space to discuss the rise and demand of video and what this means for the future of communications.

A year ago one could have had an honest argument about whether the Internet was increasing the power of the oppressor or the oppressed. Events in Tunis, Cairo, Daraa, Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing have shown that it can benefit both and that the effect of digital technology on power will be complex and contradictory. What are we to make of freelance hacker orgs, transparency activists and covert cyber war? In the annals of citizen empowerment and institutional vulnerability, democracy and anarchy share an interesting paired history, we intend to ask how the global system may handle this latest disequilibrium.

Story-telling is a process for healing. We hold in our hands digital technologies that will build a new world, a world of creativity & community, individual expression & shared visions. There has been a global effort, spearheaded by artists and technologists, to empower human rights victims to become artisans, creators, and heroes, and to celebrate their spirit, talents and traditions – of giving them a stronger voice for their future. A worldwide network of story-tellers have found voice and strength through multimedia collaboration. Multimedia creation is about giving people the power to make the world of technology, data, expression, information and art serve their lives and the larger world. It allows for a massively communal creativity, using the power of the global net to capture the common threads, the zeitgeist of the entire planet, and make content available for creative synthesis and innovation. This is a use case about global digital empowerment in the battle for human rights.

For the first time in history, the majority of people worldwide are living in cities. What does this mean for ecosystems across the planet and how does this change the way we experience the natural world? According to E.O. Wilson's biophilia hypothesis, humans have an instinctive bond with other living things, but as rapid urbanization continues, the nature near us disappears. How can we develop new ways to reconnect with nature and what roles do technology and digital media play in this effort? With backgrounds in the hard sciences, technology development and environmental activism, the panelists will share their experiences tackling these issues on the front lines of New York City. From the building of a popular city-wide festival for celebrating biodiversity to the launching of an award-winning mobile platform for citizen science, this panel will be of interest to urbanophiles, technologists, strategists, policy makers, and anyone else concerned about nature deficit disorder.

As they use the internet and media in ground-breaking ways to tell the world, Hawaiian culture is also re-asserting itself via websites sharing information on hula, political independence, taro farming and other important indigenous issues.

This panel provides a rare glimpse into the multitude of ways African women are applying technology to advance Africa’s development. The panel aims to dispel the myths about African women as breeders and victims -- incapable of participating in their own continent’s development, by: (1) showcasing contributions they are making in the technology field – through entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and community leadership; and (2) providing insights into how they are using technology to raise awareness about, mobilize campaigns against and address human rights violations.
The panel will specifically explore how African women are using technology to make an impact through:
- Digital advocacy to protect people’s rights
- Social media to help grassroots organizations engage new supporters worldwide
- Mobile advertising to enable small businesses to access new markets
- Internet connectivity to integrate the often unheard community voices into the global conversation on development
Throughout the discussion, panelists will provide anecdotes on how the resulting increased access to information, is altering the role of women in African society.

Living and working in todays’ world gives us a lot of opportunities. We cultivate friendships and establish business connections via the internet. Being a native to English almost everybody seems to speak your language. But looking at the people who have access to the internet, barely 28% actually speak English at home.
As web developers based in Germany the question of language is one we discuss regularly. Whatever we do – designing a new product, engaging in twitter, building a new website – language matters.
It is intriguing to settle for English as the most popular language around. This raises several new questions:
Will my clients or coworkers at home still understand what I am trying to tell them? How do they perceive me?
Apart from the obvious, do people who speak English really speak the same language? What do you know about their cultural background, their social reality, their everyday life?
Let’s discover some fascinating insights and develop some new ideas.

Few SXSW attendees have lived in a world without Internet access for more than a few days. However, there is such a world, it's commonplace and exists within a mile or so of this very conference center, and elsewhere for many millions, if not the vast majority on this planet.
The biggest challenge the world has in this day and age is how we collectively create a planet that has economic, environmental and political stability and manifest this future quickly enough to avoid major calamities brought on by continued resource depletion and environmental challenges that threaten us. Thankfully, we may have a few solutions such as the Internet and it's millions of tools, platforms and communities that are assisting us in this common mission.
The collective mind that is being formed through Internet use promises many educational, trade and health benefits to everyone; but it has little global value unless everyone everywhere gets connected, if not it will merely be a polarizer. The idea that big corporations will wire up Africa or Sth America, and do so cheaply enough, seems like a very expensive investment option with little R.O.I. However, through peer-to-peer platforms created by the Internet itself, connecting the world is not only achievable at low cost, but is being implemented as we speak.
My presentation shows how peer-to-peer systems are engaging millions across the world to solve problems for themselves, at low cost and renew the value of community.

The African Diaspora is vast and wide, and with that comes a variety of cultures separated by national boundaries but connected by the spirit and essence of Africa. For years, these cultures have lived separately with little understanding or connection to the lifestyles of others who share similar ideals, concerns or experiences abroad. The Internet has played a large role in connecting these cultures--through music, art, lifestyle and political interests. Over the past few years, there has been an emerging number of female bloggers of color who have become leading voices in their own communities and representations of their cultures to others all over the world. Parlour Media, owner of ParlourMagazine.com will host an open discussion featuring four leading female bloggers of color from three of the world's leading countries to discuss lifestyle and digital trends from their local communities and the benefits that they have gained by connecting with similar women abroad. In addition, panelists will discuss the tools that they have used to build audiences and the strategies that they have found most effective in developing their sites.

Mexico’s Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTOs) use various types of social media to influence and manipulate public opinion. At the most basic level, DTOs regularly post videos to Youtube of interrogations, beheadings and dismemberments of rival gang members, to intimidate other groups and the public. Myspace is another soft influence tool; profiles abound that glorify the narco-life, including photos of fast cars, blinged-out weapons, and scantily-clad women. Narco-ballads, increasingly banned on Mexican airwaves, are also available on Myspace. Blog del Narco and parrot sites provide direct interaction between DTOs and the public. These sites anonymously post images of DTO communications hung on freeway overpasses or pinned to victims’ bodies, delivering threats to rival gangs, politicians, and police, and seeking the public’s favor. Citizens once used Twitter to warn of violence along routes to work and school. Now, DTOs pose as concerned citizens and to encourage the online citizen watch to help them locate rival gangs and law enforcement. DTOs use smart-phone applications to communicate, and to navigate the border region without law enforcement detection.

Around the world, young people are the biggest consumers of technology. They are also the most vulnerable to long-term health problems related to risk-taking behaviors (tobacco, unsafe sex, unplanned pregnancies, violence, etc.). The growth of social media, mobile telecommunications and cloud-based technology creates powerful new opportunities for organizations and commercial agencies who seek to reach youth with health prevention messaging. Adolescents’ jobs are to take risks, be invincible, rule the world. So, what will it take to engage youth, and counter their developmentally appropriate adolescent behavior?
Panelists will discuss how technology is transforming health care, including looking at youth-focused outreach projects from Newark to Nairobi. We will explore how to social and mobile media are being used to educate, inform and change improve healthy behaviors among teens and young adults. Sixty years before Zuckerberg, Senator J. William Fulbright had a revolutionary idea: connect people around the world to share ideas. Born out of WWII, his vision was “public diplomacy”: exchange regular citizens of various countries to interact, share knowledge, become friends, and stay connected for life.
In the social media era, are international exchange programs like Fulbright still relevant for public diplomacy? Can social networks create the same intercultural experiences online, serving more people at lower cost? Early Fulbrighters traveled on ships and stayed in touch by letter; now they fly and friend on Facebook. Have these programs outlived their usefulness when we can instantly Skype with anyone anywhere?
The exploding number of Fulbright applications since 2001 says “no”. This panel will explore why, discussing the challenges and opportunities public diplomacy programs face in the digital age, and how participants are putting the internet at the center of their projects.
